In 1935, permission to operate Queenstown Airport was granted. 'Flightseeing' tours to Milford Sound and other tourist destinations became popular during the 1950s when commercial aviation first took off.

The grass runway was extended in the 1960s. In 1961, three flights per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, began operating from Christchurch to Queenstown via Mount Cook and on to Te Anau/Manapouri.

Britten Norman Islander, which first ran in September 1970, quickly became a mainstay on the Milford route. Flights to Milford Sound and those between Queenstown, Te Anau, and Queenstown, and Alexandria and Dunedin heavily used them.

Queenstown Airport has been served by jet aircraft since 1989, when Ansett New Zealand began service. Air New Zealand arrived in 1992. The airport's brand-new overseas terminal opened in 2015.

After further improvements to the airport, such as the installation of runway lights and onboard technology, the New Zealand CAA and the Australian CASA granted approval for nighttime flights out of Queenstown Airport in 2014.

Simon Bridges, then-minister of transportation, turned on the airport's runway lights in 2016. Airport operations continued past sunset until the noise abatement curfew of 10:00 pm, thanks to the runway lighting. In 2016, a Jetstar flight out of Melbourne became the first to depart during the night.
