In 1931, the Milson Aerodrome Society established the first airport. Only charter flights made use of it. Union Airways began operating commercial flights in 1936. Even during peacetime, the airport served as a military base.

The airport's runway was sealed, and a terminal building was built when National Airways Corporation began service there in the 1950s. In 1975, Air New Zealand began operating domestic flights out of the airport using Boeing 737-200 jets.

In 1992, a brand-new terminal opened, and in 1994, a brand-new taxiway was constructed. Significant airport improvements in 1996 allowed Freedom Air to launch regular international service to Brisbane and Sydney. In 1999, additional locations were introduced; these included Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Nadi.

The airport's Master plan for 2014–2035 was made public in 2014. The runway could be lengthened, a new taxiway could be built in a parallel direction, and an instrument landing system could be installed.

Freightways rebranded as Parcelair in 2016 after replacing their aging Convair 580s and 5800s with the larger and faster Boeing 737-400Fs to meet the rising demand for overnight shipping within New Zealand.

Higgins was hired by Palmerston North Airport in 2018 to initiate the construction of a Charlie taxiway.
