History of Hawkes Bay Airport

The airport is sometimes referred to as Napier Airport, located in the Napier suburb of Westshore. Formerly known as Ahuriri Lagoon, it now occupies that area. The earthquake in Hawke's Bay in 1931 caused this area to be elevated above sea level.

Air New Zealand's domestic jet services (A320 aircraft) require a runway length of at least 1750 meters, so in 2010, the main runway was lengthened to this specification with Runway End Safety Areas of 240 meters at both ends.
