History of Dunedin Airport

The old Taieri airfield needed to be more viable when considering future aviation growth. The current airport, built and opened in 1962, was designed with short-haul flights in mind. Upon opening, NZNAC immediately began the Fokker Friendship service, and in December 1962, the Vickers Viscount service began.

In 1963, construction was finished on a massive new hangar. From March 1966 until July 1991, Mount Cook Airlines served Dunedin. As of the end of the year 1968, NAC had begun flying the Boeing 737 to Dunedin.

In 1969, sliding automatic doors were installed in the terminal, and in 1971, a Rothman's clock was added. That same year, there was an enlargement of the restroom facilities. In 1974, a second-story observation deck and mezzanine were added for spotting airplanes.

In 1980, flooding caused the airport to close for several months. In 1993, construction on an additional runway section was completed. It was in July 1994 that Dunedin saw its first international flight, a Qantas plane.

In 1995, Kiwi Travel International Airlines began regularly scheduled service. In December of the same year, Freedom Air did the same. In 1995, Mount Cook Airlines started flying ATR-72s to Dunedin.
